The Erie Canal is a man made waterway that was constructed in the 19th century, to connect Albany to Buffalo. The canal was constructed to transport goods back and forth from the Great Lakes to New York City, via the Hudson River. The construction took nearly eight years, lasting from 1817 to 1825, and paid for itself in under ten years. The building of the canal created countless advancements for society, and even helped settle Michigan, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and other states on the Great Lakes.
